Kanagaratnam Anandakumararajah and Sarvalogeswari (Thangarajah)

Kanagaratnam Anandakumararajah (“Appa”) was born on 28 June 1937 and died on 15 July 2022. He was the son of Kanagarentam and Ratna Ambigai Ammal (Sabapathy). He married Sarvalogeswari (Thangarajah) (“Amma”), daughter of Thangarajah and Nadeswari (Duraiswamy). Together they raised six children and continued a family tradition shaped by education, public service, enterprise and community leadership.

The Paternal Ancestral Line

The paternal family was rooted in Thalaiyali Village. Its heritage included respected educators, civil servants and entrepreneurs, with a longstanding connection to community institutions and the social life of Jaffna.

Hon. A. Sabapathy Arunachalam

Hon. A. Sabapathy Arunachalam (1853–1924), associated with Thalaiyali, was a prominent educationist, journalist, philanthropist and political leader. He served on the Legislative Council of Ceylon from 1917 to 1921 as the second Tamil member.

His achievements included serving as founder secretary and president of the Jaffna Association; becoming vice-president of the Tamil Mahajana Sabha; contributing to the Saiva Paripalana Sabhai and Jaffna Local Board; editing the Hindu Organ for many years; and helping establish Jaffna Hindu College, where he served as manager from 1913 until his death in 1924. His public life reflected a strong commitment to education, Tamil society and the cultural life of northern Sri Lanka.

The Thalaiyali Heritage

The Thalaiyali Vairavar Temple remains an important part of the family's heritage. Family tradition associates M. Arunachalam with the building of the temple. The adjoining mansion is also remembered as part of the family's historic estate. In 1955, Appa became the legal trustee of the temple, strengthening the family's continuing responsibility for this sacred legacy.

Sir Waithilingam Duraiswamy

Sir Waithilingam Duraiswamy (1874–1966) was a distinguished lawyer, politician, educationist and public servant associated with Velanai and the wider Jaffna community. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1921 and again in 1924, and later represented Kayts in the State Council from 1936.

He served as Speaker of the State Council from 1936 to 1947 and was knighted by King George VI in 1937. He was also a founder and president of the Hindu Board of Education and helped establish more than 150 Hindu schools. His wider public service included leadership of the Tamil Union, the Vivekananda Society and involvement with the Saiva Paripalana Sabhai. His legacy is particularly significant in education, cultural development and public life.

The Duraiswamy Family Connection

The maternal ancestry includes Duraiswamy + Rasamma, leading into the Nadeswari (Duraiswamy) line and subsequently to Thangarajah and Nadeswari, the parents of Sarvalogeswari. The family's maternal heritage is associated with Poonakari, Colombothurai, Nallur, Araly, Mathagal and Velanai.

Amma – Sarvalogeswari (Thangarajah)

Sarvalogeswari (Thangarajah) carried forward a maternal heritage connected to the Duraiswamy family and the wider Jaffna peninsula. Through her marriage to Kanagaratnam Anandakumararajah, the paternal and maternal family traditions became joined in the next generation.

The Grandchildren

The grandchildren named in the family record are Dinesh, Prakash, Arran Santosh, Aksharan Kaarthik, Adhisvar, Manishvar and Shruthika. They represent the continuing generation of the Kanagaratnam–Sarvalogeswari family.

A Legacy of Education, Leadership and Service

Sabapathy Arunachalam and Sir Waithilingam Duraiswamy provide particularly notable examples of leadership and service, while the Thalaiyali Vairavar Temple represents a continuing spiritual and historical connection.
