Early Life

Born on June 28, 1937, Appa was the cherished son of Sabapathy Kanagaretnam and Ratnambigai Ammal. His birth in Inuvil Hospital marked a joyous moment for the family, symbolizing the continuation of a proud lineage rooted in Thalaiyali Village.

Despite the economic downturn caused by the Chetty rice crisis and the Great Depression, the family’s cultural and spiritual heritage remained strong. Appa’s birthplace was the guest house of the Old Mansion, adjacent to the revered Thalaiyali Gnana Vairavar Temple.

Schooling & University

Appa’s academic journey began at Kaladdy Nursery, where his brilliance shone early. He famously rescued the school during an inspection by answering untaught questions, earning admiration and respect.

At Kokuvil Hindu College, under the legacy of his grandfather Arunachalam Sabapathy, Appa excelled despite skepticism about his achievements. His performance in the 1950/51 SSC exams as a 13-year-old prodigy was remarkable, navigating a confusing format with ease.

Though offered double promotions, Appa chose a steady path, valuing depth over speed. His time at St. John’s College in Jaffna culminated in a university entrance that granted him a rare exemption from a full year of honors study—a distinction awarded to only five students across the island.

Peradeniya Years (1954–1958)

Peradeniya was a time of joy, friendships, and intellectual growth. Appa’s wide circle of friends and his popularity were evident even in moments of grief, as noted by the Kurunagala Postmaster.

Professor H.A. De S. Gunasekara praised Appa’s academic excellence, offering him a scholarship and a departmental position—both of which he declined. He earned an Honours degree in Economics and University Colours in two sports.

Marriage & Partnership

Appa’s marriage was arranged between two respected Jaffna families. Amma, a talented Bharatha Natyam dancer, was admired for her grace and beauty. Their union was often compared to Hollywood stars by friends, and they remained a strong team through life’s challenges.

Family Lineage

Appa’s father, Sabapathy Kanagaretnam, was the sole heir to the family estate. Despite setbacks, he was brilliant and respected. The family’s legacy includes educators, civil servants, and entrepreneurs.

His grandfather, Arunachalam Sabapathy, was a revered leader and reformer. His great-grandfather, Murugan Arunachalam, built the Thalaiyali Vairavar Temple and expanded the family’s business empire across Asia.

The family’s influence was shaped by strategic marriages with Jaffna’s aristocracy, preserving cultural and economic stature.

Built by M. Arunachalam, the temple is a sacred family legacy. Appa became its legal trustee in 1955. Despite historical erasure attempts, the temple and adjoining mansion remain symbols of the family's spiritual and cultural heritage.
